History
Helm traces its history back to the wild, wooly 1880s when AC Johnston sold coal, lumber and cars. Our current company was founded as Freeport Blacktop Construction Company in 1946. Eventually, FBT became Civil Constructors. The rest is a story of decades of strategic diversification and growth, continuous improvement and innovation. Our tight-knit culture is the same as it ever was, but everything else has evolved and grown.
Helm is now a sophisticated, fully integrated company with a broad range of top-shelf construction capabilities and geographic locations. In 2019, we came to realize our brand identity, the familiar old “Evil Oval” carrying the simple, categorical names Mechanical, Civil, Conmat and Heavy, was in need of a strategic and creative update to reflect our unity and strength.
Our new icon is an evolution of our old oval – contained in a shape that frequently occurs in natural and manmade engineering: the hexagon. The hexagon is the strongest shape known to mankind. It appears in everything from ice crystals to beehives; from Irelands’ Giant’s Causeway to dragonfly eyes; from geodesic domes to nuts and bolts. The lines that form Helm’s hexagonal new logo suggest the dynamic, multi-layered company we have become – and the employees who team up to bring value to our customers’ projects.
