We are proud to provide mechanical systems expertise for the expansion of Fifth Third Arena, the premier practice facility for the Chicago Blackhawks and community ice users. The project more than doubled the facility footprint to over 250,000 square feet, adding two new NHL-sized ice sheets and expanded support spaces while maintaining operations in the existing arena.
Helm’s scope included mechanical piping, HVAC distribution, and plumbing to support high-performance ice, spectator areas, and back-of-house spaces. Work included installation of approximately 6,000 linear feet of piping, 2 dehumidification units, 2 rooftop units (RTUs), 3 energy recovery ventilators (ERVs), 1 make-up air unit (MAU), and 14 condensers for split systems throughout the expansion.
The project required careful phasing and coordination to integrate new systems with the existing facility while meeting stringent ice quality and environmental control standards. The expanded arena enhances training capacity and community access with reliable, efficient mechanical systems designed to support long-term performance.
