Position Overview

Are you an experienced Project Manager with a thorough knowledge of HVAC and Plumbing system installation throughout a broad spectrum of building types? The Helm Group is seeking a proactive individual who can engage clients, navigate projects from conceptualization to completion, and deliver exceptional results through innovative management techniques.  This person will lead a team of individuals on large-scale projects across the Midwest.

This position is for our national division which is responsible for the HVAC, Plumbing, and Piping scopes of work for new construction projects as well as remodel work in buildings such as data centers, hospitals and associated healthcare buildings, and sports stadiums.  The national division is a traveling group; individuals work on large multi-year projects and then move to the next project in a different location. 

This role is to be located on a site to be determined somewhere in the Midwest, but the national division’s home office is Westmont, IL.

Key Responsibilities

  • Have full ownership of profit and loss responsibility for projects ($20-$100 million range)
  • Drive preconstruction strategy, including estimating, GMP development, and risk planning
  • Interface with executive leadership, owners, and clients
  • Mentor and develop Project Managers, Project Engineers, and field leadership
  • Drive prefabrication integration
  • Manage all aspects of Mechanical trade work (piping, sheetmetal, plumbing), overseeing projects directly with owners and Construction Managers
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • Utilize customer relations, project accounting, technical prowess, and cost control to drive project success.
  • Apply basic design and code knowledge effectively.
  • Supervise the entire construction process to ensure adherence to design, budget, and schedule, fostering relationships with clients, A/E representatives, and subcontractors.
  • Interpret and work from P&ID drawings, translating them into layouts and ISOs for construction.
  • Coordinate company personnel activities, ensuring efficient project execution.
  • Foster and maintain relationships with clients and A/E contacts to facilitate ongoing and future projects.
  • Monitor and control construction progress, analyzing variances and implementing corrective actions.
  • Manage financial aspects including buyouts, billings, payments, subcontractor agreements, expenses, and value engineering to protect company interests and client relationships.
  • Make critical decisions impacting project profitability.
  • Authorize and oversee all project transactions, including billings, subcontractor requisitions, and material purchases.
  • Maintain project logs and documentation files, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Apply expertise in mechanical systems (process piping, plumbing, HVAC) from project inception to closure, including conceptual design, estimating, pre-construction, and construction phases.
  • Demonstrate experience in both construction self-performance and direct craft labor oversight.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, Project, PowerPoint).
  • Familiarity with BIM/CAD processes and fabrication practices on job sites.
  • Knowledge of scheduling software (MS Project, Primavera).

Requirements

  • Accredited Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Construction Management and minimum of 10-15 years’ experience in construction leadership (Project Manager or higher) specific to Mechanical Trade Work.

OR

  • 10-15 years progressive trade experience including 5-10 years’ experience in construction leadership (Project Manager or higher) with experience specific to Mechanical Systems.

Salary & Benefits

Salary Range: $140,000-$170,000
