Position Overview

Are you ready to take the next step in your career with Helm? As a Lead Vehicle/Equipment Service Technician, you’ll play a vital role in keeping both company-owned and customer vehicles and construction equipment operating at peak performance. In this hands-on position, you’ll be responsible for diagnosing and repairing a wide range of vehicles and heavy equipment with minimal assistance, ensuring efficiency, safety, and reliability across all operations.

Your responsibilities will include servicing diesel engines, hydraulic systems, braking systems, and more across a diverse mix of equipment—from service trucks like Chevy Silverados to medium-duty equipment such as Gehl skid steers, as well as semis and heavy machinery including dump trucks and excavators. You’ll support both internal fleet needs and external customer equipment, helping deliver high-quality service that builds strong, lasting relationships. In addition to your technical expertise, you’ll contribute to achieving service department goals related to productivity, profitability, and both employee and customer satisfaction. This position is part of our Truck and Equipment division and is based in our Freeport, IL facility.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for making repairs to all types of vehicles with minimal assistance.
  • Have complete and good communication with Service Manager and Foreman.
  • Share knowledge of years of experience to others in department as needed.
  • Input to Assistant Service Manager and Foreman on shop tooling needs.
  • Flexible start and stop times of workday to meet shop and customer needs.
  • All documentation required to complete repair orders.
  • Maintain knowledge level on changes in the vehicle repair industry.
  • Complete training as assigned by Service Manager and Foreman.
  • Well-developed repair skills.
  • People skills necessary to interact in a positive way with service department team and customers.
  • Analytical problem-solving techniques.
  • A comprehensive knowledge of methods and materials used in service department repair work.
  • Loss/Gain on repairs made.
  • Safety Record.
  • Customer Satisfaction.
  • Ability to obtain certifications in other fields.

Requirements

  • 5 years experience in the vehicle/equipment maintenance field.
  • Understanding of diesel engines
  • Computer skills
  • C.D.L. drivers license.

Salary & Benefits

Range: $60,000-$80,000
