Since our inception, Helm has been driven by a commitment to excellence in every project we undertake.
Our story began in 1946 as Freeport Blacktop Construction Company in Freeport, Illinois. In those early years, we operated as a chip-and-seal contractor—mining our own aggregate and spreading it on country roads throughout the region.
A new chapter began in 1963 when Robert Helm joined the company. Under his leadership, the business expanded beyond blacktop into asphalt paving, highway bridges, and wastewater treatment plants. When his brother, Bruce Helm, joined in 1970, that momentum continued with further diversification into structural steel, general building, and mechanical piping.
As our capabilities grew, so did our identity. Rebranding first as Civil Constructors and later as Helm Group signaled to clients that we had evolved into far more than a traditional paving contractor. Through the 1980s and 1990s, Helm expanded its heavy civil, marine, and mechanical work across multiple states, delivering increasingly complex projects.
During this period, Helm also emerged as an industry leader—among the first regional contractors to introduce in-house engineering, CAD, multi-trade skid manufacturing, and HVAC service. Even as we grew, we remained grounded in a family-driven culture that valued craftsmanship, innovation, and people.
Together, Robert and Bruce Helm built a legacy of strategic diversification, continuous improvement, and forward-thinking innovation. In the 2000s, leadership transitioned to the next generation, who advanced this legacy while maintaining the family culture that had made the company so successful.
